Graveside Inurnment Service for lifelong Dove Creek resident, Irma Donetta Weed, will be held Thursday, November 5 at 10 a.m. at Dove Creek Cemetery. Pastor Mark Coffey will officiate. Donetta, 85, died on October 27, 2015 at Vista Grande Inn, Cortez. Irma Donetta Nelson made her grand appearance to Luther and Gladys Nelson on January 21, 1930 in Denver, Colo. Gladys slipped on iced stairs as she entered the hospital and a kindly policeman delivered her. Since she was such a tiny baby when she was taken home, she was kept warm in a box in the warming stove. Gladys died from pneumonia when Donetta was three. Luther and baby Donetta returned to his parent's home with Donetta for help in caring for her. He met Ethel Plummer. Later they were married. Luther was an electrician and they moved from one small town to another small town on the Eastern Slope of Colorado. The family settled in Cheyenne Wells, Colo. The family grew as brother Dale Nelson, identical twin sisters Evelyn and Marilyn, and little brother Paul Nelson joined the family. In 1947 Donetta met a handsome young Navy sailor from just across the state line in Kansas. Their first date went like this: Dad played saxophone in a local band, mom was supposed to go and just listen to the music. Dad had one to many drinks, forgot about her and she walked home. They must have worked out the problem because Grandpa allowed dad to keep coming around. He either liked dad or enjoyed arguing with someone from the other sideA republican! On June 27, 1947 Ted Weed and Donetta Nelson were married. They headed west trying to make a better life for their growing family and settled in Dove Creek, Colorado. Valerie and Teresa were added and their family was complete. After they moved to Dove Creek, they opened Ted's Dry Goods which they both operated until Ted became the President of Dove Creek State Bank in 1965. Donetta ran the dry goods store and raised 5 kids. In 1971, they bought the Frontier Bar. They both ran the bar until 1981 when Ted passed away. Donetta continued to operate the bar on her own until she retired several years later. She was famous for her home cooked corned beef and cabbage dinner for St. Patrick's Day. After Donetta retired she purchased a new home and she was so proud of it. She loved her Thursday morning coffee time with Cindy, Neta, and Valerie. She always had a stack of special magazines for each of them. If any extra grand kids or great grands came along it made the morning extra special. She was an avid reader, sometimes having three or more books going at any time. She was sharp in her mind, full of common sense. She enjoyed sending birthday cards to her grandkids. Nobody loved decorating for Christmas more than her; or for that matter, Easter, or Fourth of July, or Halloween or Thanksgiving. She would magically transform her home for the current holiday. She always had a jigsaw puzzle going. She got so much satisfaction from finishing her puzzle. They couldn't be taken apart until everyone had seen the finished puzzle. In August of 2015 she realized that she needed a little more help. She spent her last three months in Vista Grande Inn. She completely enjoyed her new life at Vista Grande. She made new friends and renewed old ones. Every day she looked forward to that day's activities. The staff at Vista Grande was so good to her and we are forever grateful to them. On October 27, 2015 Donetta left life to join God and dad in heaven. We're sure she is enjoying every minute of it. Donetta is survived by son Ken and Kay Weed, daughters, Cindy and Mark Coffey, Neta and Dan Johnson, Valerie and Jerry Carhart, Teresa Weed and Brad Peterson. 14 Grandchildren, and 23 great-Grandchildren. Ted and Donetta were very proud to be Americans. Donetta always donated to the veteran's. The family would ask that any Memorial Contributions be made to our local VFW Post 5181 Box 428 Dove Creek, Colo. 81324 attn: Dave McCuskey.
