IRENE SOPHIA PAYNE Funeral services for Irene Sophia Lenthe Payne, 94 of Cortez, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 29 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor David Dahl will officiate. Cremation will take place following the services and graveside services will be held at a future date in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Fargo N.D. where Irene will be interred. Visitation has been set for Monday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Irene was born August 21, 1913 to Louis A. and Minnie (Lemke) Lenthe at Baker, Minn. She passed away at The Valley Inn in Mancos on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Sabin, Minn. and was confirmed at St Pauls Lutheran Church in Henning, Minn. She grew up on a farm in rural Henning and graduated from Henning High School in 1931. She married Sydney Irwin Payne on February 27, 1937 in Fargo N.D. They made their home on their farm near Argusville, N.D. for eight years and later moved to West Fargo N.D. In West Fargo they owned and operated Payne Pumice Inc until Irwins death on September 6, 1960. Irene moved to Cortez in 1982 to be near her daughter Kay and family. In 2002 she entered Vista Mesa Assisted Living Home in Cortez CO. She later entered Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos CO in 2006. Irene was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fargo N.D. She and Irwin were founding members of St Andrew Lutheran Church in West Fargo. At Trinity Lutheran Church in Cortez, she was active in LWML and made many quilts. Surviving Irene are two daughters Arlene Payne of Fargo N.D. and Kay Honeman of Tucson AZ; and one son, Derald Dick Payne of Dickinson N.D.; five grandchildren, Marilyn, David, Cheryl, Grant and Michelle and five great grandchildren; one sister Laura Lisle of Milwaukee, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a son, Larry Payne; a daughter, Donna Majer; two brothers, Ed Lenthe and Reuben Lenthe; and a sister, Viola Hanson.
