HOWARD VAN PELT Memorial services for longtime Dolores resident, Howard Van Pelt will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, June 18 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Howard was born on October 7, 1923 in Calistoga, Calif. the son of Harrison M. and Dora F. (Maxfield) Van Pelt. He passed away on Sunday, June 13, 2004 at the Heart Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M. at the age of 80. In 1937 Howard moved to the Dolores area. He served his country in the United States Army and on November 20, 1942 in Gering, Neb. Howard married Emma E. Pratt. He spent his career as a Farmer and Rancher, running cows. He was also a member of the Southwest Cattleman’s Association. Surviving Howard is his beloved wife, Emma Van Pelt of Dolores; his three children, Sheryl Bensen and husband, Gary of Alamosa, Colo., Judy Gilpin and husband, Jess of Cortez, and Monty Van Pelt and wife, Sheila of Cody, Wyo. He leaves nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren; as well as his sister, Leota King of Cortez. Preceding him in death is his son, Hoyt Van Pelt; and one brother and one sister.
