Herman Ray McCabe Jr. “Ray” was born on March 8, 1949 to Pauline and Herman Ray McCabe Sr. in Cortez, CO. He entered Heaven’s gate on December 26, 2019 in Cahone, CO with family at his side. Ray was one tough hombre, a Navy Vietnam Era Veteran, an entrepreneur, a great husband, a special dad and granddad, just a special person who touched so many lives with wonderful memories.
Ray was raised on the family farm in Cahone and graduated in 1968 from Dove Creek High School. He then served in the Navy. Afterwards, he lived in Grants, NM where he worked in the uranium mines and later started his own business inventing a device that could detect uranium from underground from any direction, which he holds patents on today. Ray was a brilliant man, with a mechanical mind that could fix almost anything. Later in life he became a slot machine technician in casinos in New Mexico and Colorado. After retiring, Ray and his wife moved back to the family farm in Cahone.
Ray is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Renate; his son, Russ and his wife, Karen; his daughter, Paulett and her husband, Rojelio; his step son, Tony Will and his wife Maria; his step daughter, Tammy Ryan; his brother, Ron and his wife, Debbie; 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Ray was preceded in death by his parents, Pauline and Herman McCabe Sr.
Funeral services will be on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at 10 a.m. at Ertel Funeral Home, Cortez, CO, with graveside services at 11:30 a.m. at the Cahone Cemetery.
