HERBERT RUBEN “HERB” SPERLE Funeral services for longtime area resident Herbert Ruben “Herb” Sperle will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9 at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Herb was born on May 19, 1936 in Bison, S.D., the son of Albert and Martha (Kolb) Sperle. He passed away on Thursday, October 4, 2007 at the Vista Grande Inn at the age of 71. On November 29, 1964, Herb married Melvina Roundtree in Cortez. He spent his working career in the oil field. After his retirement Herb loved time spent fishing and trapping. He was happiest in time spent with his grandchildren and helping neighbors. Surviving Herb are his wife of 42 years, Mel Sperle of Dolores; children, David Van Cleave and wife, Samantha of Elgin, Ore., Kenny Sperle and wife, Pauline of Cortez, Kelli Likes and Krissi Elliott both of Cortez; grandchildren, Ross, Kyle, Keegan, Keenan, Trace, Kara and Sarah; and one great grandchild, Corteny. His siblings, Arlene Moe and husband, Norman of Reagent, N.D., Ann Jacobson of Springfield, Ore., Robert Sperle of Prairie City, S.D., Renee Haggert and husband, Lowell of Lemon, S.D.; and brother-in-law, Leonard Hay of Lemon, N.D. also survive Herb. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Betty Hay.
