Funeral services for Cortez resident Helen Charles McClellan will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 21, 2022 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Pastor Marvin Graves will officiate. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery.
Helen passed away on Friday, March 11, 2022 at her home at the age of 91. She was born to the late Henry and Hettie Charles on August 10, 1930 in Cortez, CO. She graduated from Montezuma County High School in 1948. In 1950 Helen married Dean McClellan in Aztec, NM. They had one of the first homes built on Empire and lived there until her death.
Helen worked her professional career with Empire Electric, then pioneered into local politics as the first woman Cortez city council woman and then a term as Montezuma County Commissioner. Helen was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, DAR, and the Montezuma County Historical Society.
Helen is survived by son, Richard McClellan (Janice) of Cortez, CO; daughter, Barbara Nutt (Dean) of Poulsbo, WA; grandchildren, Jeremy Rosenbaugh (Amber), Randy Rosenbaugh (Laurie), Kris Nutt (Kateri), Jennifer Freeman (Josh), and Garrett McClellan (Angie); 11 great grandchildren; and sister, Marie Rumburg of Cortez, CO. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Dean McClellan; parents, Henry and Hettie Charles; and sister, Elaine Haley.
