HAZEL LAVINA PHILLIPS Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident Hazel Lavina Phillips will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 6 at the Cortez First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Reverend Al Strauss will officiate. Visitation has been scheduled for Friday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Hazel was born on September 30, 1921 in Cheyenne, Wyo. the daughter of William and Mary Alice (Mann) Bonnell. She passed away on Friday, October 29, 2010 at Aspen Gardens Assisted Living. In 1938, Hazel graduated from Brigsdale High School in Greeley, Colo. She married Sterling Charles "Buckey" Phillips in 1939 and the couple shared 50 loving years of marriage. A devoted member of the First United Methodist Church, Hazel loved her church dearly. For many years, Hazel worked with her husband, Buckey at B&D Electric. Hazel took care of the bookkeeping for the electrical company. Hazel was very active in her community. She enjoyed playing golf and Bridge, loved dancing, she spent time volunteering at the Methodist Thrift Shop, and went to the Senior Center and Christian Women's Fellowship. Hazel loved her family dearly, she was fun-loving and she was a wonderful mom. Surviving Hazel are her children, Sandy Fosnot and husband, Delbert of Cahone and Stanley Phillips and wife, Vera of Whitewater, Colo.; her five grandchildren, Debbie Sanders and husband, Bert of Dove Creek, Brenda Palmer and husband, Wes of Cortez, Gary Crites and wife, Wendy of Chandler, Ariz., Brian Phillips of Lafayette, Ind., and Ben Phillips of Grand Junction, Colo.; three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchild. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband, Buckey Phillips; by her great-granddaughter, Julie Grubbs; and by six siblings. Memorial contributions may be made in Hazel's name to the First United Methodist Church or to Aspen Gardens Assisted Living Center.
