FORREST LEROY THOMPSON Funeral services for Forrest Leroy Thompson will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 30 at Memorial Hall (old High School gymnasium). Burial will follow at Peel Cemetery. Forrest Leroy Thompson was born in Cortez, Colo. on April 30, 1959 to Charles "Chuck" and Joan Thompson, the second of three boys. As a teenager he made a profession of faith and followed the Lord in baptism at the First Baptist Church. He attended school at Dolores County where he graduated with the class of 1977. While attending high school he was active in sports. He planned to participate in sports every season during his senior year. However during the final month of his Junior year he suffered a broken leg. He spent the summer in a cast and was unable to participate in any sports at all during his Senior year. After graduating from high school, he attended San Juan Vo-Tech School where he studied building construction. After completing his studies at the Vo-Tech School he went to work for Union Carbide at the Deremo-Snyder uranium mine. After June 24, 1978 he married Janelle Hatfield. When the work at the mines played out, Leroy worked at various other jobs until he entered the New Mexico State Police academy in Santa Fe, N.M. Upon graduating from the academy, he and Janelle moved to Clayton, N.M. where he was assigned with the New Mexico State Police. His marriage to Janelle ended in divorce. Leroy then met and married Janet Thompson. They married March 14, 1990 and moved to Eagle Nest, N.M. That is where Leroy was assigned with the New Mexico State Police. Shortly after moving to Eagle Nest, the most exciting event of Leroy's life happened. His precious son Zachariah Landon was born on January 21, 1992. Leroy (Forrest to the people of New Mexico) spent several years with the New Mexico Police but eventually resigned to begin in the building industry. He worked with his good friend Tim Hunt for a number of years. With the downturn of the economy, the building industry became so slow. Leroy embarked on another facet of his life. He again went to work for the State of New Mexico with the Children's Youth and Family Services. He also continued to work on building projects on his spare time. Leroy had served in the Planning and Zoning Commission and was currently serving on the Eagle Nest City Council. Eagle Nest Mayor Richard Cordova was quoted in the Sangre de Cristo Chronicle as saying "He was a good man. He looked after everybody. He was for the people always. I've worked with Forrest and he was always a good and fair man and everybody had a lot of respect for him. We all looked up to him as far as issues that came before the council. He was always straight forward on what was right and wrong." Forrest Leroy Thompson departed this life on April 22, 2012 the result of a motorcycle accident. He leaves to mourn his passing, his parents, Chuck and Joan of Dove Creek, Colo.; his son, Zach of Salt Lake City, Utah; his beloved Nancy of Eagle Nest, N.M. and her family, Cris, Selena, Nathen and Lindsay of Rio Rancho, N.M.; his brother, Charles Eugene and wife, Julie of Clifton, Colo.; two nephews, Chance and wife, Shelly and Derik of Dove Creek, Colo.; one niece, Charlene Curtis of Dove Creek, Colo.; and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by an infant sister, Dana Charlene; one brother, Timothy; as well as his grandparents, Frosty and Myra Thompson and his "Granny" Maude Evans. Leroy will be greatly missed.
