FLORENCE JULIAN DOWNEY Florence Julian Downey, lifelong resident of Cortez passed away at Golden Years Retirement Home in Dolores on Tuesday, February 8, 2005. She was 92 years old. Florence was born August 26, 1912 in Windsor, Colo., the daughter of John Julian and Florence (Carlson) Downey. After moving to the Cortez area, the Downey family became quite involved within the community. Judge John Downey served in the courts here for a number of years. In honor of Judge Downey’s dedication and service, Downey school was named for him. In her early years, Florence was known for her vivacity and humor. Her niece, Marilyn remembers Florence letting her at the age of 4 crawl into her lap and drive just because Marilyn wanted to know what it felt like. Marilyn also remembers her to be the most tenderhearted, compassionate, sweet and kind person, much like Florence’s father. She was an avid reader, trusted God, and believed in the After Life, looking forward to being reunited with her beloved sister, Elizabeth Downey Ricker as well as her parents. Her only niece, Marilyn Meberg of Frisco, Texas, survives Florence. No services are planned. Cremation will take place and her remains will be buried next to her parents in the Cortez Cemetery.
