FERRY ENID ROBERTS Memorial services for Cortez resident Ferry Roberts will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, September 3 at Cortez First Baptist Church. Pastor Vic Powell will officiate. Ferry Enid Davison Roberts was born July 20, 1924 to Jesse Berl Davison and Grace Alma Corrie Davison at Stonington, Colo. She passed away Saturday, August 29, 2009 in Cortez. During Ferry’s younger years the family lived in Stonington, Bartlett and Monte Vista, Colo. The Great Depression and the Dust Bowl in the 1930’s made a life long impression on Ferry. In 1938 they relocated to a farm in the San Luis Valley. Ferry attended school in Monte Vista and graduated from Rio Grande County High School in 1942. She joined the Nurse’s Cadet Corp. and graduated from Parkview Hospital and School of Nursing in Pueblo, Colo. in 1946. Ferry married the love of her life, John D. Roberts of Rocky Ford, Colo. on December 8, 1946 in the First Baptist Church of Monte Vista, Colo. Ferry and Johnny lived in Pueblo, Colo. They were members of the First Baptist Church there until moving to San Diego, Calif. in 1952. They loved the beaches, museums and other things about San Diego. They were charter members of the Trinity Baptist Church where Johnny served as a deacon and Ferry served as Sunday School Superintendent for two years. Johnny passed away in October 1957. Ferry worked for the Urological Associates of San Diego until 1969 when she became Director to Women’s Housing for Biola College in La Mirada, Calif. In 1978 she re-entered the nursing profession at Whittier Presbyterian Hospital in Whittier, Calif. Later, she returned to work for the Urological Associates in San Diego until her retirement December 1986. Ferry moved to Cortez after her retirement to be near her mother, a decision she felt was blessed. In 1987, she joined First Baptist Church. Ferry was Sunday School Superintendent for two years; she taught the Joy Class, was active in Women’s Ministries and other aspects of church life. She enjoyed the Widow’s Connection and was a charter member of the Armchair Quilters. She was involved with scrapbooking, quilting, various needle crafts, and an avid reader. She took on the job of caring for her two nieces, Katherine and Jennifer Edwards in 1989. Ferry was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers: Robert and Clarence, her sisters: Mary A. Hull and Ruby Jean Edwards, and her nephew Joseph Edwards. Ferry is survived by her brothers: Melvin and his wife Vee of San Antonio, Texas, Charles and his wife Mary of Reedly, Calif., and her sisters: Grace Morris and her husband “Buck” of Portland, Tenn.; Janet Hatch and her husband Emer of Cortez, as well as 18 nieces and nephews, many grand and great-grand nieces and nephews, plus numerous dear friends. Ferry was a lifetime supporter of missions. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to New Tribes Mission through First Baptist Church of Cortez.
