On Wednesday, November 13, 2019, Esther Lois Stuckman went home to be with the Lord at age 79.
Early in the morning of March 31, 1940, a baby girl was born in a small house at 310 N. Washington Street in Cortez, CO to Bert and Mae Stuckman. They named her Esther Lois after their mothers. Three years later, Lois welcomed her baby brother, Norman Lee.
After Norman’s birth, the family moved to California where Bert worked in the shipyards. After the War ended, Bert moved the family back to Lebanon, CO. They soon purchased a small family farm near relatives in Lebanon. The family moved to Cortez in 1957 where Lois completed her High School Diploma in 1959.
Lois spent the next several years between Cortez and Phoenix, AZ. While in Phoenix, she attended Lamson Business College.
She returned to Cortez permanently in 1965 where, in December of that year, she went to work for Nielson’s Inc. in Dolores. Although Lois began as a secretary in the main office in Dolores, in her early months with the company, she held positions ranging from Field Office Manager, flagger and pilot car driver to Payroll Officer. Before her first year with the company was out, Lois was permanently assigned to the main office as Executive Secretary. She thoroughly enjoyed her forty-one and a half years with Nielson’s where she retired in June of 2007.
Lois loved the mountains and spent time camping with family whenever she could. Lois also loved her animals, small dogs in particular. She loved the wild animals as well and spent hours caring for her yard, trees, and flower beds to encourage birds and butterflies to make their homes there.
Lois was preceded in death by her parents, Bert and Mae Stuckman of Cottonwood, AZ. She is survived by her brother, Norman and his wife Mary Lynn of Cortez, CO; her nieces, Debbie of Marysville, WA, Amber Bechtol (Jason) and great-niece Megan of Buckeye, AZ; Coleen Peterson (Keith), great-nephew Kade and great-niece Clare of Wickenburg, AZ; and Christine Pemberton (Jake) and great-nephew Ayden of Phoenix, AZ; as well as numerous family and friends in both Montezuma and La Plata Counties.
A Celebration of Life service will be held Saturday December 7, 2019 at 11:00 am at the New Covenant Fellowship Church located at 146 S. Maple St. Cortez, CO. Lunch will be served following the service.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Montezuma, PO Box 740, Cortez, CO 81321; or For Pets’ Sake Humane Society, PO Box 1705, Cortez, CO 81321.
