EDITH VIOLA ELLISS Funeral services for longtime Mancos resident, Edith Viola Elliss will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 28 at the Mancos United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Pastor Craig Paschal will officiate. Edith was born the daughter of Munson Alonso and Ella Mae (Chatelain) Morton on July 26, 1914 in Frontier County, Neb. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Saturday, May 21, 2005 at the age of 90. Edith married John Elam Elliss Jr. on August 26, 1933 at Halls Summit, Kans. In 1953 the Elliss family moved to the Mancos Valley. John and Edith shared 41 years of marriage before John's death in December 1974. Edith was an active member of her community, belonging to the Mancos United Methodist Church and volunteering for the Senior Center. She loved time spent in the kitchen and was considered a good cook. She also loved to sew and read. She was also known to walk everywhere. Edith was an active participant in her children’s and grandchildren's activities, following all the sports and ball games. She raised three of her grandchildren, Jeanette, Christina and John Elliss IV. Surviving Edith are her children, Lois Casey and husband, Harvey of Yukon, Okla., Rovilla Ellis and husband, Darrel of Mancos, John 'Jack' Elliss III and wife, Segaula of Mancos, Richard Elliss and wife, Cecelia of Littleton, Colo., and Ray Elliss and wife, Marcy of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and 17 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren. Her sister, Vera Elliss of Iola, Kansas; and brother, Floyd Morton of Sullivan, Ill. also survive Edith. Preceding Edith in death are her husband, John Ellis Jr.; a daughter, Eleanor Marie Elliss; three sisters, Velva, Nelly and Pearl; and two brothers, Alfred and Kenneth. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Edith Elliss with the Mancos First United Methodist Church.
