EDITH MAE LIKES Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident Edith Mae Likes will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 19 at Arriola Bible Church. Interment will follow at Arriola Cemetery. Pastor Kent Slyter will officiate. Visitation has been scheduled for Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel. On May 15, 2011, Edith went to be with the Lord. She was surrounded by her children at home. Edith was born August 28, 1920 in Rocky Ford, Colo. to Charlie and Florence Newby. Edith moved to Cortez from Rocky Ford, Colo. with her family in 1933. In her younger years she worked on the family farm where they raised certified seed. Edith helped with her younger brothers and sisters. On March 25, 1938, Edith married Dale Likes of Cortez. Into this union four children were born. Edith's greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. She loved spending time in her yard and going camping in the mountains with family and going for long jeep rides. Edith was a housewife and mother for many years. She worked for 17 years as a housekeeper and manager at Sands Motel. Edith was preceded in death by her father and mother; her husband, Dale Likes; her daughter-in-law, Fay Likes; one grandson, Cliff Likes; one great-grandchild, Wyatt Papoff; and by four brothers, Kenneth, Herbert, Johnny and Raymond Newby. Surviving Edith are her sister, Nadine Robinson of Flora Vista, N.M.; two brothers, Jim Newby and Charles Newby and wife, Carol all of Cortez; her children, Bob Likes and wife, Terri of Cortez, Larry Likes and wife, Kay of Aztec, N.M., Duane Likes and wife, Barbara of Cortez; and Bev Papoff and husband, Rick of Cortez; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
