Dr. Howard Ray Beard

Graveside services for 20 year Cortez resident, Dr. Howard R. Beard, will be scheduled at Waverly Cemetery, Waverly, Kan. Dr. Howard R. Beard died October 26, 2015 at Vista Grande Nursing Home. Dr. Beard was a chiropractic physician practicing in Topeka, Kan. for 17 years. At the end of that time; at the age of 47 years he sold his practice and moved to his farm near Harveyville, Kan.; where he continued to maintain a moderate practice for another 13 years. Dr. Beard was born October 17, 1926; in his grandmother's stone house mile north of Williamsburg, Kan.; this house still stands. His father was Howard E. Beard of Waverly, Kan.; and his mother was Bernice A. Goodwill originally of Williamsburg, Kan. Dr. Beard graduated from Waverly High School in May of 1944. Three days later in Kansas City, Mo.; he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He served in the Pacific area as a gunners mate and also as an anti-aircraft gunnery instructor on Saipan and Guam. Dr. Beard graduated from the Kansas State Chiropractic College in 1955. In June of 1962 he married Betty L. Wells; Betty passed away in 1994. In June of 1995 while attending his 50th high school reunion Howard met up with a childhood playmate, Madge Story. They were married on October 1, 1995; Howard relocated to Cortez, Colo. Dr. Beard is survived by Madge Story Beard of Cortez, Colo. and his son John H. Beard of Brawley, Calif.; and his sister Ruth Marie Logan of Lawrence, Kan.
