Longtime Goodland, Kansas resident Dorothy I. Hirsch, 103, died December 21, 2008 at the home of her daughter Judy in Cortez, CO. Dorothy was born December 16, 1905, at Lyons, KS, the daughter of Lula (Middlekauff) and Ira Romig. She attended high school at Washburn Rural High School and graduated from Washburn University, Topeka, KS, with a teaching certificate in music. She taught music in the Little River, KS and Goodland, KS schools and gave private violin lessons. Dorothy was the last survivor of ten children and lived most of her younger life in Topeka, KS on a holstein dairy farm, bordering the Washburn University campus. On June 26, 1931, she married Norris "Doc" Hirsch at Topeka, and they began their long married life in Goodland. Dorothy was a member of Chapter Z, P.E.O., in Goodland for seventy-seven years, and a longtime faithful member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She was on the church Altar Guild, played the church organ for seventeen years, and submitted her mother's homemade noodle recipe for the chicken noodle benefit, which is still active at St.Paul's. She loved playing bridge with friends and canning vegetables grown in "Doc's" garden. She was also an eighty year member of the Delta Gamma social sorority. Most importantly, she was known as a gracious lady and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three brothers and six sisters. Surviving family members include two daughters Mignon Kirkpatrick and Judy Osterhoudt, both of Cortez, CO; two grandsons David Kirkpatrick, his wife Trish, and children Natalie and Everett, of Durango, CO; and Curtis Osterhoudt of Los Alamos, NM; three granddaughters Allison Colwell, her husband Grant, and children Mackenzie and Zoe of Scottsdale, AZ; Sarah Marbach, her husband Don, and children Justine and Jake, of Scottsdale, AZ; and Margot O'Donnal, her husband Jeff, and daughter Shelby, of Chandler, AZ; plus many nieces and nephews. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, December 30, at 10:30 am MT at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Goodland, with The Reverend H. A. Lycett officiating. Burial will follow in the Goodland Cemetery. Memorials may be designated to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and may be left at the service, or mailed to Koons Funeral Home, 211 N. Main, Goodland, KS 67735-1555.
