DONALD RICHARD SCHLOTFELT Funeral services for Cortez resident, Donald Richard Schlotfelt will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 19 at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Pastor Barr Chittick will be officiating. Cremation will follow. Visitation will be held Thursday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Born on August 10, 1932 in a farmhouse in Benton County, Iowa to parents, Harry and Ada Schlotfelt, Don was the sixth of seven children. Don passed away on Saturday, September 13 at Mercy Medical Center in Durango, Colo. at the age of 82. His grade school years were spent in Mt. Auburn, Vinton and Keosauqua, Iowa. He attended Junior High school and ninth grade at Keosauqua, Iowa where his father was custodian of Lacey Keosauqua State Park. His family moved from there to Wildcat Den State Park between Muscatine and Davenport, Iowa. He finished High School there and graduated from Muscatine Junior College. He received his B.A. from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, Iowa in 1954. Don received his Masters Degree C.S.C. in Greeley, Colo. in 1966. Don accepted his first teaching position in Pilot Mound, Iowa. From there he moved to Maquoketa, Iowa teaching, coaching and later became athletic director. Don moved to Cortez in 1967 teaching a year at the Junior High, then accepted the position of Assistant Principal at Montezuma Cortez High School, a position he held for five years. Don was the Principal of MCHS for 14 years, he retired in 1988. During Don's retirement he continued to enjoy his favorite past times; fishing, golfing, hunting, Cubs baseball, Iowa Hawkeye football/basketball, bridge and spending time with his wife of 46 years, Shirlie. In addition to his time devoted to education, Don was also active in several community groups. He spent 10 years on the Southwest Memorial Hospital Board, three years on the Hospital Foundation Board. Involved with Rotary Club as president and treasurer. Don was active with Trinity Lutheran Church including being Church Elder. He also served on the State Athletic Board. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Ada; two brothers, Howard and Keith; three sisters, Marjore, Adelene and Beverly. He is survived by one sister, Harriett of Coralville, Iowa; his wife of 46 years, Shirlie of Cortez; two daughters, Marcy of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Marty Jo and husband, Robert Denicus of Davenport, Iowa; son, Kyle and wife, Lisa of Phoenix, Ariz.; two granddaughters, Rachel and Jenna of Iowa.
