DONALD DRUMMOND Graveside services for longtime Dove Creek area resident will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 25 at Dove Creek Cemetery. Visitation has been scheduled for Saturday afternoon from 1 to 2 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Don was born on August 17, 1926 in Midland, Mich., one of eight children born to George and Opal Drummond. He passed away on Monday, October 20, 2008 at his Cahone residence at the age of 82. Three months prior to high school graduation, Don joined the Merchant Marines and finished his education while sailing. After his tour in the Merchant Marines, Don sailed the Great Lakes for a year. In 1948, Don married Alys Alderton. To this union four children were born, Linda May, James Guy, Jeffrey Donald, and Douglas D. Don had many interesting careers. He was employed by Dow Chemical in Midland, Mich. as a water treatment plant operator. Upon leaving Dow Chemical in 1952, Don went to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. where he farmed. In 1950, Don went back to lower Michigan and returned to Dow Chemical in Bay City. Along with his father-in-law and brother-in-law, Don built a new home in Kawkawlin, Mich. A few years later he went to work at Delta College as a maintenance supervisor. In 1968, Don and his family moved to Arvada, Colo. He was a salesman for Dearborn Chemical and traveled extensively. Shortly thereafter he went to Rocky Flats and worked there until he moved to Dove Creek in 1973. Don and Alys bought the Blue Mountain Caf, which they operated until 1980. Don and Alys moved to Cortez where he operated the Cortez Water Treatment Plant. Don had a severe heart attack in 1982 forcing him to retire. Don and Alys returned to Dove Creek where they managed the trailer park and campground store. Eventually the couple moved to Kingman, Ariz. In the winter months they enjoyed selling beans in Quartzite, Ariz. Don and Alys moved to Cahone in 2005. Don enjoyed telling deer stories, hunting, fishing and camping with his kids, family get-togethers, spending time with his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and traveling. Surviving Don are his wife of 60 years, Alys Drummond of Dove Creek; his children, Linda Coffey and husband, Mike of Dove Creek, Jeff Drummond and wife, Shirl of Denver, and Douglas Drummond of Kingman, Ariz.; and his grandchildren, Nicholas Coffey and wife, Pam of Dove Creek, Grant Coffey and wife, Dena of Dove Creek, Lucas Drummond and wife, Stephanie of Kingman, Ariz., and Dana Drummond of Kingman, Ariz. Don also leaves behind his great-grandchildren, Desirhae Troy of Kingman, Ariz., Lucas Drummond Jr. of Kingman, Ariz., Logan Drummond of Kingman, Ariz., Nichole Coffey of Dove Creek, and Michael Coffey of Dove Creek; and his sisters, Marion McCartney of Midland, Mich. and Jean Finley of Hilliard, Ohio. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his son, James Guy Drummond in 2004; and his siblings, Margaret Metzer, James Drummond, Richard Drummond, Edward Drummond, and Mabel Bliss.
