Funeral services for longtime area resident, David Wesley “Wes” Ayers will be held on Ertel Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, December 27 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at Cahone Cemetery. A dinner will follow at the Dove Creek Community Center.
David Wesley Ayers was born on July 13, 1931 to Charles William and Mary Luetta Ayers in Cahone, Colorado.
As a young man, Wes followed the seasonal harvest. He harvested peaches around Grand Junction, beans in the Dove Creek/Cahone area, and cotton around Florence, Arizona.
It was in Florence, Arizona where he met the love of his life, Peggy. He saw Peggy playing baseball with some of her siblings and Wes turned to his brother, Velda Ray, and said, “I’m going to marry that girl.” Wes and Peggy were married for 73 years before Peggy passed away.
Wes and Peggy grew into a hardy family and while they moved often in their younger days, in 1966 they bought a farm in Egnar, Colorado. The farm became their home.
Wesley loved to spend his time farming, gardening, and hunting. He took great pride in trapping. Wes worked in several mines and loved to share stories of that time of his life. Wes was a prankster and loved to give people a laugh.
Wes passed away at his home in Egnar, Colorado on December 20, 2023. His memory will live on in all who knew and loved him.
