CURTIS FEWEL GARRETT Memorial services for longtime area resident Curtis Fewel Garrett will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 13 at the Mancos Methodist Church. Reverend Craig Paschal will officiate. Curtis, son of Levi Fewel Garrett, Jr. and Margaret Ann Garrett, died on May 9, 2011 at the age of 65. He was born in Kansas City, Mo. on May 29, 1945. The family moved across the Missouri state line to Leawood, Kan. in 1957. Curt attended high school there and then served for the U.S. Army for two years. Most of his career in Kansas City was spent working for his father at the family produce distribution center of Garrett-Holmes & Co., Inc. At the time the company sold, Curt had worked his way through the ranks to the position of vice-president. Curt's greatest dream was realized when he moved with his family to Cortez in 1980. He loved the mountains and everything about them. He was an expert at his favorite pastime of fly fishing. He also enjoyed teasing, playing pranks, jeeping and camping trips. He never tired of watching the sun rise over the La Platas and set behind the Sleeping Ute Mountain. After working for many years at Cortez Tire and Safety Service, Curt moved to Denver. He returned to the Montezuma Valley in January of 2006. He enjoyed a quiet life near his beloved mother who taught him the art of stained glass. He became very committed to this craft and spent long hours perfecting his ability. Many people will forever enjoy the beautiful pieces at which he worked so diligently. Curt is survived by his mother, Margaret A. Garrett of Mancos; his sister and brother-in-law, Sheryl and Victor Bruce of Mancos; his daughters, Heather Nash and husband, Kevin of Kirtland, N.M., and Heidi Kuenzler and husband, Zane of Denver, Colo.; and by his grandchildren, Skyler Nash of Kirtland, N.M. and Zye Kuenzler of Denver. Curt was preceded in death by his father, Levi Garrett; and by his grandson, Tristen Curtis Garrett. Memorial contributions may be made in Curtis Garrett's name to the Mancos Methodist Church.
