CORDY ORTIZ WALLACE ENGLEHART Memorial services for lifelong area resident, Cordy Ortiz Wallace Englehart will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 16 at the Johnson Memorial United Methodist Church in Dolores. Rev. Vickie Richards-Street will officiate. Visitation has been set for Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Cordy (Mary Cordelia) was born April 13, 1917 to Pete and Martina Ortiz near Fort Garland, Colo. and was raised up the Dolores River at Stapleton. She passed away Friday, May 11, 2007 at her rural Cortez home. Cordy attended school at the Sunnyside School about a mile down the road from Stapleton and then later she attended high school in Dolores and graduated in May of 1938. In June of 1938, Cordy married Arthur Wallace who was a rancher in the area. They lived in Dolores for several years where they ran the Texaco station that was across from Flanders Park. In 1940, she and Arthur bought a ranch up the Dolores River just below Stoner. They had two daughters, Dolly and Jeanie. Arthur died in January of 1961 and Cordy moved to Durango to attend nurse’s training at Mercy Hospital. She attained her Licensed Practical Nurse degree and worked as a nurse at Mercy until 1964 when she and the girls moved back to Stoner. In August of 1965 she married Carl Englehart who was a farmer and dairy-man from Lewis. They lived at Lewis and spent time at the ranch at Stoner where they ran a herd of beef cattle. Cordy is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Dolly and Lynn Gardner and Jeanie and Dean Roundtree; sisters, Sissie Stone of San Diego, Calif., Juanita Rasmussen of Solvang, Calif., Ramona DeLaney and husband, Herb of Denver, Colo.; and brothers, Bert Ortiz and wife, Josie of Lemon Grove, Calif., and Bill Ortiz of Dolores. Also surviving Cordy are her stepchildren, Laverne Starkebaum and husband, Clark of Haxton, Colo., Stanton Englehart and wife, Pat of Durango, Colo., Jim Englehart and wife, Mary of Cortez, Chuck Englehart and wife, Judy of Phoenix, Ariz., and Carla Weiscamp and husband, Dale of Monte Vista, Colo.; as well as by grandchildren, Kristi Roundtree and Russell Roundtree; and numerous step-grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by both her husbands; her parents; and sisters and brothers, Dolores Bradley, Celia Lazzerino, Alice Mizar, Joe Ortiz, and Charles Ortiz. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Cordy Englehart with the Dolores United Methodist Church or Hospice of Montezuma.
