Connie Lee Riggs Jowell

CONNIE LEE RIGGS JOWELL Graveside services for longtime Cortez resident Connie Lee Riggs Jowell will be held Monday, September 12 at 2 p.m. at Highland Cemetery in New Castle, Colo. Connie was born September 7, 1919 in Pine Bluff, Ark. to James Harvey and Julia Ann (Adams) Scott. She passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home at the age of 91. On June 30, 1934, Connie married Arthur "Art" James Jowell in Garfield County, Colo. They shared 34 years of marriage before his death in 1968. Connie then married Jesse Edward Riggs and he passed away in 1990. Connie was a chef at the Hotel Denver and the Crystal Palace in Aspen for many years. In her spare time Connie enjoyed gardening, canning, and fishing. She also loved to crochet and quilt; she made numerous quilts and afghans for her grandchildren. Surviving Connie are her sons, Jim Jowell and wife, Annette Schmidt of Carbondale, Colo., Jerry Jowell and wife, Verna of Dolores, Stephen Jowell and wife, Bobbi of Enumclaw, Wash., and David Jowell and wife, Donna of Lewis; her daughter-in-law, Elke Jowell of Grand Junction, Colo. and son-in-law, Gary Sanders; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Connie was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; her children, Jack Jowell, Paul Jowell, and Clara Ann Sanders; her daughter-in-law, Esther Jowell; and by two brothers and three sisters.
