Charles Dean Newby

Funeral Services for lifelong resident, Charles Dean Newby, will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at Cortez First Baptist Church. Pastor Marvin Graves will officiate with interment to follow at Cortez Cemetery with Military Honors. Charles Dean Newby was born on May 20, 1933 in Arriola, Colo. the son of Charles Edward and Florence Bell Schofield Newby. Charles passed away at his residence on January 14, 2016 at the age of 82. Charles and Carol Sue Stanley were married on November 25, 1955 in Aztec, N.M. Charles served in the U.S. Army from May 13, 1953 until May 14, 1955. Following five years of employment as a state electrical inspector, he owned and operated Newby Electric for 25 years. Charles was one of the founders of the Lewis-Arriola Fire Department and served from February 1978 until 1994. His spare time was spent hunting, fishing, gardening, rock hounding and generally just loved being in the outdoors. Charles is survived by his wife, Carol Sue Newby of Cortez; his children, Ronnie Newby (Debra) of Bayfield, Colo., Lori Schluter (Joseph) and Rick Newby (Paula) all of Cortez; his eleven grandchildren, Liz, Amanda, Jessica, Micky, Misty, Shannon, Cassie, Devin, Davey, Robert, Alex; his nineteen great grandchildren; his numerous nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Florence Newby; his daughter, Dena Newby; his daughter-in-law, Lori Hall Newby and his siblings, Herbert Newby, Nadine Robinson, Raymond Newby, Kenneth Newby, Edith Likes, Johnney Newby and James Newby. Memorial contributions may be made in Charles' name to Lewis-Arriola Community Center, 21176 Road S, Cortez, CO 81321.
