CAROL ANN "BUNKEY" SMITH Funeral services for lifelong area resident Carol Ann "Bunkey" Smith will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, October 26 at the First Southern Baptist Church in Dove Creek. Interment will follow at Dove Creek Cemetery. Pastor Mark Coffey will officiate. Carol Ann Smith was born November 19, 1932 at home north of Dove Creek to Frederic James and Anna Elizabeth (Johnson) Young. She passed away on Friday, October 22, 2010 at San Juan Memorial Hospital in Monticello. Carol was affectionately known as "Bunkey" all her life because it was a nickname bestowed on her by her daddy and older brother Troy when she was born. Bunkey grew up in Dove Creek, graduating from high school in 1951. Her young life and throughout her teen years were spent helping her parents in the family grocery store where she had occasion to meet new people who had moved to town. One of those people was a young mechanic and one day while walking down the street with friends she saw him and she told her friends, "That is the man I am going to marry," and she did. The wedding took place at the First Southern Baptist Church of Dove Creek on November 27, 1952. That man was John Richard Smith. Together they had four children, Troy, Racine, Jonna and Bonnie. Also, Johnny, as Bunkey preferred to call him, brought two more sons and two more daughters into the family from a previous marriage, Vivian, Virgil, Dennis and Peggy. The young family lived a short time in Naturita where Johnny worked as a mechanic for a drilling company and later they made their home in Durango for a time. Each time returning to Dove Creek because that's where their hearts were and that's where they wanted to raise their children. Bunkey accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior in 1962 and became a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Dove Creek. Her Lord and her church became a strong foundation of her life. Bunkey took great pride and pleasure in her family and she loved to garden. Flowers and vegetables were always abundant in her yard. Bunkey is survived by her children, Troy Smith and wife, Barbara of Palmer, Alaska, Jonna Smith and husband, Bill, Bonnie Thompson and husband, Rod, Virgil Smith and wife, Barbara, all of Dove Creek, Dennis Smith of Chugiak, Alaska, and Peggy Cundiff and husband, George of Graling, Wash.; 23 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; and by her brothers, Jack Young and wife, Carolyn of Las Vegas, Nev., and Bill Young and wife, Dorothy of Medford, Ore. Bunkey was preceded in death by her beloved Johnny; two daughters, Racine and Vivian; her parents; two brothers, Fred Jr., an infant, and Troy who was lost at sea during World War II. Memorial contributions can be made in Carol Ann Smith's name to the Dove Creek Ambulance Fund.
