BETTY JO PROFFIT Graveside inurnment services for longtime Cortez resident Betty Jo Proffit will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 7 at the Cortez Cemetery. Pastor Jimmy Kennedy will officiate. Betty was born on February 5, 1929 in Frederick, Okla. the daughter of Joe and Anna (Mathis) Gates. She passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at Vista Grande Inn at the age of 79. On July 17, 1948, Betty married Star Proffit in Prescott, Ariz. The couple shared 59 years of marriage. Betty had previously worked at Southwest Memorial Hospital. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles. Surviving Betty are her husband, Star Proffit of Cortez; her children, Sharon Hustedt and husband, Rodney of Roswell, Georgia, Debra Martin and husband, Larry of Ely, Nev., and Jacquelin Proffit of Telluride, Colo.; and her grandchildren, Timothy Hustedt, Brandon Hustedt, James Neel, Sara Martin, and Star Stephens. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Edna Dalton of San Jose, Calif., and Anna Santos of Fortuna, Calif. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; and five sisters.
