BERTA L.SCHAAK Funeral services for Berta L. Schaak, a longtime resident of Pleasant View will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, December 8 at the Cortez Christian Church with Minister Charles Story officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Pleasant View. Visitation has been set for Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Berta was born at Pleasant View on April 12, 1920, the daughter of Charles Otis and Mary Mildred (Schaaf) Seelig. She passed away at her home on Thursday, December 2, 2004. She was 84 years old. On December 23, 1945 Berta married Frederick A. Schaak in Colorado Springs, Colo. Together they spent nearly 59 years of marriage. Dedicated to education, Berta spent 26 years teaching elementary, middle and high school. She taught at Cortez, Center, Dove Creek, Alamosa, North Pleasant View and Pleasant View. Expanding her commitment to education, she served as Secretary of the Pleasant View School Board and helped to see that the Pleasant View School was built. Berta, too, was committed to her church. She was a charter member of the Cortez Christian Church and belonged to the women’s auxiliary of the Gideon, as well as the Rainbelt Ladies. Berta loved her family deeply. Surviving Berta are her husband, Freddie Schaak of Pleasant View; two sons, John Schaak of Castle Rock, Colo., and David Schaak and wife, Regina of Cortez; five granddaughters, Jaima DiMartino and husband, Phil of Colorado Springs, Colo., Leah Schaak of Kansas City, Christina Schaak, Sierra Schaak and Jenna Schaak all of Cortez; and one great grandchild, Arianna DiMartino. A sister, Betty Jo Reese of Longmont, Colo. also survives Berta. Berta was preceded in death by her son, Dale Root Schaak in 1976; and by her brother, Lester Seelig. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Berta Schaak with Hospice of Montezuma, 1345 S. Broadway, Cortez; or Cortez Christian Church, 2306 E. Empire St., Cortez.
