Alys May Drummond

August 15, 1930 — February 3, 2025

Cortez

Alys May (Alderton) Drummond was Born August 15, 1930, in Hale, Michigan to Robert and Elma (Putnam) Alderton. She passed away February 3, 2025, at Vista Grande Rehabilitation and Health Center in Cortez, Colorado.

Growing up on a farm, Alys preferred (by her own admission) to be outside helping her dad on the farm or riding horses.

Alys favorite subjects in school were geometry and basketball. She graduated from Onewna County High School in the spring of 1948.

A young man who came to visit frequently with his brother, noticed that the skinny girl with pig tails flying as she rode her horse had grown into a beautiful young lady. Don Drummond and Alys began dating and on August 21, 1948, they were married. This union was blessed for over 60 years. Don and Alys had four children: Linda May, James Guy, Jeffery Donald, and Douglas D. These four children were truly blessed with a wonderful mother. Alys was patient, caring, loving, and very supportive. She was always ready to assist and help in any way she could. She was always there for her children.

Alys was a devoted wife and followed Don on all his employment moves. She may have confessed to being a tomboy in earlier years, but she was an excellent homemaker. She was also very involved in the raising of her family, being an active member of the PTA and a cub scout den mother to the many boys in the neighborhood.

When the family moved to Colorado in May of 1968, Alys jumped right in to making their new house and yard a lovey home.

The family moved to Dove Creek, Colorado in 1973. There they became the owners of the Blue Mt. Café. Alys was the main cook and overall supervisor.

After a few years they sold the café and eventually moved to Kingman, Arizona. As Don’s health began to fail, they moved to Cahone, Colorado. Alys was active in the Cahone Senior Center and was the main organizer of the County Cupboard.

Alys was a wonderful, loving grandmother and great grandmother. She was always there when needed and helped raise two grandchildren. She enjoyed teasing them especially at family get togethers. There was always lots of “ya-ya” going on (mostly started by Grandma). The grandchildren affectionately called her “Fluffy” due to her fluffy white hair.

Alys enjoyed music. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ. She passed this love on to grandchildren.

Alys was a Christian all her life and publicly accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior in March 1983.

Alys will always be remembered for her love and feistiness. Thank you for everything Alys. Your beautiful soul will not be forgotten.

Preceding her in death: her parents, three brothers, two sisters, husband (Donald) and two sons (James Guy and Jeffery Donald).

Surviving her: daughter Linda (Mike), Son Doug, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
