ALVIN DALE SATTLEY

Graveside services for longtime area resident, Alvin Dale Sattley will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at Summit Ridge Cemetery.

Alvin was the son of James Edmond and Ruby (Phleps) Sattley. He was born September 17, 1925, in Los Angeles, Calif. As an infant, the family moved to Oregon where he grew up. He always enjoyed livestock, 4-H activities, and a good faithful dog by his side. When he was 18, he joined the US Navy in July 1943 and honorably served his country fighting in the Pacific Front of WWII. After completing his hitch in the military in 1946, he traveled to southwest Colorado to visit his navy friend, Don Royce. He arrived in Disappointment Valley driving a 1935 Ford Coupe. He soon met Don’s younger sister Edythelma Royce. After a few months, he was shot by cupid and they were married on December 21, 1946, in Aztec, N.M. To this union, three children were born, Jesse James, Thomas, and Carol Sue. Alvin began his ranching career working for Edyth’s parents, Clyde and Pearl Royce.

After a lot of hard work and planning, Alvin and Edyth began their own ranching operation. Both continued to share a love for horses, cows, and the ranching way of life. Side by side for 66 years they had worked nonstop to improve the Red Limousine Cross Breed commercial cattle herd. Alvin had a wealth of knowledge concerning the range land of San Miguel, Dolores, and Montezuma Counties. He rode a horse and helped with the cattle until he was 91 years old. He still enjoyed occasionally buying a good mustang. Alvin was a good man, willing to help his neighbors at any time expecting nothing in return.

Alvin passed away on Tuesday, October 31, 2023, at the age of 98. He will be missed by many.

Surviving Alvin are his son, Jesse (Charlene) Sattley, daughter, Carol (Bill) Taylor; three grandchildren, Derrick (Tashina) Taylor, Adam Sattley (Bob), Abby (L.J.) Lyons; and two great grandchildren, Alex and Olivia Lyons.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Edythelma; his son, Thomas Kent; his grandson, Darren Kirk Taylor; and his siblings, Carl Sattley, Vernon (Betty) Sattley, Theta (Bob) Dow, Sylva (Albert) Solberg, and Leon (Jonette) Severson.
