ALONZO CARPIO LEON Funeral services for Alonzo Carpio Leon, a longtime Mancos resident, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 1 at New Life Assembly of God Church in Mancos. Reverend Paul Houston will officiate. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. Visitation has been set for Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at New Life Assembly of God Church. Alonzo was born the son of Aldolfo and Arelia (Lopez) Leon on January 2, 1931 in Los Pinos, N.M. He passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Durango on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at the age of 79. Alonzo was raised in the Mancos area. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He later was employed by Hill Air Force Base in Clearfield, Utah as a materials processor. He held that job for 35 years. After moving back to the Mancos area, Alonzo became a life member of New Life Assembly of God Church. He loved landscaping, traveling and recycling. He enjoyed most, though, time spent with friends and family and especially with his grandson, Angel. Surviving Alonzo are his wife of 35 years, Rae (Gonzales) Leon of Mancos; his children, David Leon of Washington, Tim Leon of California, Randy Leon, Cindy Leon, and Tina Marie Leon all of Washington, Joyce Sanchez and husband, Bill of Denver, Colo., Dawn Leon of Mancos, and Helena Leon of Denver, Colo.; and by numerous grandchildren. Also surviving Alonzo are his siblings, Viola Gurule and husband, Jerry of Roy, Utah, Gabriel Leon and wife, Lillian of Sunset, Utah, Abel Leon and wife, Rosie of Layton, Utah, Alex Leon and wife, Veva of West Valley City, Utah, and Pete Leon and wife, Alphy of West Valley City, Utah; and by a sister-in-law, Lupita Leon of Layton, Utah. Alonzo was preceded in death by his parents; and by one brother, Adolf Leon. Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Alonzo Leon with the Mancos Valley Bank.
